GCC Coordinator Larry Marsh receives the

2013 CARL SCHURZ HERITAGE AWARD

 

Larry Marsh is presented the award by Lansing Hecker, President of the German American Heritage Society of St. Louis.

Larry Marsh, Coordinator of the German Culture Center at the University of Missouri-St. Louis received the 2013 Carl Schurz Heritage Award on September 21 at the “Taste of Germany” Benefit Dinner at Sunset Country Club in St. Louis.


The German American Heritage Society of St. Louis presents the annual award to recognize individuals for their “dedication to the preservation of the history and heritage of our German forebears.”


The award was named for the famous 19th century German immigrant who served as a Civil War general, newspaper publisher, U.S. envoy to Spain for President Abraham Lincoln, U.S. senator from Missouri, and secretary of the interior under President Rutherford B. Hayes.


Mr. Marsh noted his deep appreciation the honor and paid special thanks to GAHS its ongoing support for UMSL’s German Culture Center and for other German cultural and educational institutions in St. Louis. 


Marsh has led the Center since 2000, following a long career as a high school history and German teacher. For his work promoting greater understanding of German culture, Marsh was previously honored with the Friedrich Hecker Freedom Award in 2003, the Federal Republic of Germany Friendship Award in 2008, and the Patron's Gold Medal from Allgaeu-Swabian Musical Association in 2010.


Marsh began his life-long interest in German language and culture as a college exchange student to Goettingen University in 1963. He was a Fulbright teacher at the Studienkollleg in Heidelberg in 1969.  In 1985 he was named Ferguson-Florissant’s Teacher of the Year and was a finalist for Missouri’s Teacher of the Year.  In 1996 he received the Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award.


He is very active in the arts and has conducted Northwinds Concert Band for over thirty years. The ensemble is known for its innovative programs, including many with European themes.   He has also directed and designed over 80 theatrical productions and was awarded a Lifetime Achivement Award by Arts of Life.
